jon kennedy – take my drum to england

•June 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

take my drum

Released: 2003
Label: Grand Central Records
Country: UK

genre: electronic, funk/soul
style: instrumental, downtempo, trip-hop

“Jon is a one man outfit born in the hills of Dukinfield (Stockport) who has a heavy passion for beats basslines and luscious melody’s.

He used to work from his mini-studio in an old Tudor style cottage (where the Scruffy one used to
reside) just outside of Stockport town centre, cutting, pasting and manipulating samples to fit his own style of drumming. Now he resides in Bristol, UK.

With 16 years worth of drumming under his belt, he has now moved on from various bands to writing his own organic works. Incorporating live acoustic guitar, bass and of course live drums with the odd scratch  or sample. All styles apply with this young multi-instrumentalist.

Jon has amassed a sizeable store of tunes “just waiting” to be tapped into further. The future bodes well  for the original 32 year old musician.  ( written in 2001 )” source

low in the sky – we are all counting on you, william

low in the sky official website | myspace

Released: 2007
Label: Abandon Building Records

genre: electronic, rock, hip-hop
style: instrumental, post-rock, downtempo, ambient

“‘Akron, Ohio’s Low in the Sky succeed in the electronic/instrumental hip-hop realm because they aren’t trying to be groundbreaking, and they have no inclination to do so. Dear Birds boasts no thematic threads, maverick home studio fuckery, big name guests or cinematic intros, outros or segues. There’s not a gimmick to be found here — it’s just a collection of twelve four minute songs that exist as ends unto themselves, and though its premise is none too exhilarating, its results are — and then some.

Low in the Sky cover a remarkable amount of ground, both stylistic and emotional, over the album’s course. Despite the fact that pretty much any of these beats would work well behind an MC, the group frequently accompanies them with rock trappings. “Are You Right Here?” lives by a whirling slack rock guitar lead that summons an entire decade worth of alterna-giants, from Smashing Pumpkins to Mogwai, and the title track also stomps on the distortion pedal, climaxing with a gorgeous melody that could out-emote and overpower Explosions in the Sky any day. Cleaner, folkier guitars form closer “At the Source of the Longest River“‘s meditative core. “Cool Sanson“‘s jazzy interludes, “The Cowboy Natural“‘s downtown funk and “Go Federal“‘s spacious crackling vinyl drum track contrast the other songs’ rock sensibilities and prove that this isn’t just another case of guitars doing battle with samples.”  source

Released: 2007
Label: Skrapez

genre: hip-hop
style: instrumental hip-hop, industrial

“Skrapez is founded by Jonathan Calzo aka 10shun and are based in San Diego, CA. They do all kinds of fucked up beats mixed up with turntablism. The Skrapez crew give us skillful scratching with distorted sound picture which are usally bad, but still gives us a real feel of underground sence. You need to listen openminded or you probably will be offended by their style.”

Tenshun’s (real name Jon Calzo) is an eclectic turntable/electronic music artist and beatmaker from San Diego CA, head of Skrapez label and part of the Creatures and Killowatz crews.

who dat myspace

Released: 2009
Label: Lex Records

genre: electronic, hip-hop
style: instrumental hip-hop

Jneiro Jarel aka Dr Who Dat? Who dat? He is the backbone of his innovative group Shape of Broad Minds and the other half of Willie Isz along with Khujo Goodie from ATL’s lengendary Goodie Mob! He is one of the 1st hip hop producers from the 90′s along with ishmael (Digable Planets), Organized Noize, Madlib, The Neptunes and a few others to take hip hop to astral places! Connecting outer space with true hip hop. Others have made attempts but wasn’t able to capture the true essence of the cosmic vibes! Seeing sound as stars and comets that blast off to Viberia! He also is a vocalist/producer/multi-instrumentalist that fuses shoegaze, psychedelic rock , soul, electronica and punk with his sound!
Viberia? Where is that? Is that where Jneiro Jarel is from? Viberia is anywhere, everywhere and nowhere! He is from all places. Spends most of his time between Viberia and Georgiavania.
Why do you want his music/vibe in your life? Well after winning the respect of The Pharcyde , MF DOOM, Mos Def, Digable Planets, Tribe, Cee Lo Green and other members of Dungeon Family/Organized Noize. Wait! Must I go on? Okay! TV on The Radio, Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), DJ Spinna, Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Madlib , Stones Throw, etc… Need I say more?
That’s wuzup? Does he have any albums that I can cop? As the doc says “Jup”! (1) Jneiro Jarel – Timeless Vol 1 (2) Jneiro Jarel – Three Piece Puzzle (3)Dr Who Dat – Beat Journey (4) Shape of Broad Minds – Craft of The Lost Art .
What’s next? Dr Who Dat’s Beyond 2morrow, Willie Isz’ Georgiavania and some other things he got stored in his vault. There is no stopping to this musical genius! Just when you think we are in doom here comes super JJ to save the decade! He is like a rock star super hero to say the least! Knoooow daaaat!!

“Put on your seat belts cause we are bout to blast off!!!! ” Quote from the song Blast Off” – Willie Isz

erik sumo band official website | myspace | youtube

Released: 2005
Label: Pulver Records
Country: Germany

genre: electronic, funk/soul, jazz
style: gypsy jazz, abstract, downtempo, broken beat

“This Budapest-based producer, otherwise known as Ambrus Tövisházi, has numerous aliases, Erik Sumo being the one he is best known for internationally. On ”My Rocky Mountain“ he brings Eastern European flavours together with Western musical trends with remarkable ease. You’ll want to turn this up loud, revel in the new sounds, and do some sort of strange bellydance round your living room. A sophisticated mixture of blues, jazz and breaks is created by Sumo‘s accomplished seven-piece band – best tracks are the eerie ”Friday I’ll Be Dead“ with Juli Fábián on lead vocals while ”Sirens of the Dead Sea“ is perfect for that aforementioned belly dancing.” source
